Capitol Reef National Park/Fruita, 8/17/22

Sunday, May 14, 2023

Before going to Fish Lake we decided to go a day early and spend some time at Capitol Reef National Park. I hadn't been here since I was a little kid, and it was the first time for everyone else. There was a little construction on the way into the park so we couldn't take a picture by the Capitol Reef sign, but we'll get one next time we visit!

We learned the Capitol Reef area is called "land of the sleeping rainbow" in Navajo* because of the beautiful and colorful layered canyon walls. We went on several hikes here and loved it. The rock really did remind us of a sleeping rainbow.

*I think I read this in a guide book, but now I can't find a reliable source, so this info actually may not be correct. I still like the sleeping rainbow imagery, though.

Our first stop in Capitol Reef was Fruita. It is an area where Mormon settlers farmed and planted orchards, and the orchards are still maintained by NPS staff today. When we were there a few apple trees were ripe, which you can pick yourself and then pay in the drop box on your way out. The girls loved picking the fruit, and we also loved seeing all the mule deer here. There were a ton in the orchard as I'm sure they love the fruit, too, haha.

After picking some apples we drove to where you can see petroglyphs. It was so cool to see this ancient artwork carved into the rock surface. The petroglyphs were created by Fremont people who lived in the area from about 300-1300 CE. We loved looking at the different images and designs created, and thinking about these ancient people who lived here so long ago.

Apple Picking, 8/22/19

Friday, August 30, 2019
Grandma and Grandpa Burton were able to come up and stay with us last week! We had so much fun with them! They originally planned to come up and stay with the girls for the weekend while Scott and I were planning to go to Homer and go on the annual halibut charter with my work. However, the day they traveled up here, my work decided to cancel the charter due to the recent wildfires and road closures of the Sterling highway. (The only way to drive to Homer.) It was a little bit of a bummer, but definitely the right decision for the situation. Had it not been canceled we definitely would have been stuck for hours at a time waiting to travel behind a pilot car for portions of the highway. We still had tons of fun with Grandma and Grandpa though, and we're so glad they were able to stay with us!

The first day with Grandma and Grandpa we went apple picking at our favorite orchard in the Big Lake area. Scott was at work, and Ruby was at school, but we had fun with just Noelle and Robyn. The orchard is so beautiful and the apples were delicious! Enjoy these fun pics!

Tarte Tatin, 9/30/18

Thursday, October 4, 2018
With all the apples we just picked I've been wanting to make a yummy baked apple treat. I got a Mary Berry cookbook from the library (We love The Great British Baking Show!) and we decided to try her Tarte Tatin recipe. I'm not a huge fan of cooked apples, but this one turned out pretty good. The crust was almost like a shortbread, and the apples were covered in a delicious caramel sauce. :)

Apple Picking #2, 9/26/18

After picking Ruby up from school last Wednesday we decided to pick apples again at the cute little orchard just a few miles from us. We had another beautiful, sunny, fall day, and we picked plenty of delicious apples that we've been enjoying just about everyday with our lunches. :)

The owners are so nice and let us sample all the available varieties. :)

Apple Picking, 9/3/18

Thursday, September 6, 2018
On Monday (Labor Day) we went to a cute little u-pick apple orchard just a few miles from us. It was a beautiful sunshiny day, and we had so much fun picking our own fresh, delicious apples. We got a couple different kinds for eating and baking, and we've definitely been enjoying them. (Expect a blog post coming soon for a delicious baked apple treat that I'm planning to make, haha.) The owners of the orchard are so nice, and they also let us try a few cherries and plums. :) They were yummy!

We definitely enjoyed our Labor Day weekend, and I feel so blessed to have this beautiful family, and that we're able to do so many fun things together. I love being a wife to my sweet Scott, and a mother to three perfect girls. <3 Enjoy these fun pics!

Caramel Apples, 9/5/16

Monday, September 26, 2016
On Monday (Labor Day) Scott had the day off, but it ended up being pretty rainy, so we mainly just stayed home. We still had a fun day though! We made caramel apples with the apples we had picked the previous week (see here) and they turned out so cute! The apples were a little tart, but the caramel was delicious! :)

Apple Picking, 8/31/16

Thursday, September 1, 2016
Sadly summer is coming to an end, but fall is just around the corner! On Scott's day off yesterday we decided to go apple picking. There's a nice little orchard really close to us, and the girls had a lot of fun picking the apples off the trees. We got a nice variety and we'll have to make something yummy with them! These are just a few quick cell phone pics, but still fun. :)

Caramel Apples

Friday, October 16, 2015
With it being fall, I was in the mood to dip some caramel apples! We saw some at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Park City, and I've wanted to make some ever since. We used the recipe from Our Best Bites, Honey Caramel Apples. I'm not sure I liked the honey in the caramel, but they were fun to make, and turned out looking pretty good, too.
